Economic snapshots from 1983 and 1988
http://www.1980sflashback.com/1988/Economy.asphttp://www.1980sflashback.com/1983/Economy.asp
Description: The average salary increased by nearly $7,000 a year and everything else went up with it. The economy was much higher than where it started.
Analyze: The overall increase in wealth shows that the citizens of the United States had a lot of money and were spending it on more and more lavish things. The economic boom was partially the result of the return to a healthy oil supply; OPEC still had control but was no longer strangling the west. The economic boom was partially due to the economic freedoms brought about from the Ronald Reagan industry in the 80s, in sections such as advertising and children's products. Since presidents are usually judged almost solely based on their economic performance, it is easy to understand why Ronald Reagan was reelected and had his Vice-President elected the next term.

Sputnik
http://history.nasa.gov/sputnik/
Description: The Soviet Union successfully launches Sputnik into space around the time of the Red Scare. This will then lead to America's "space race" with the explorer project.
Significance: This launch leads to American emphasis on science, math, and English subjects in schools. These subjects soon gained lots of money from the government so that new scientists may come of out colleges to create further innovations. It also leads to america's fascination of space travel. Congress then passes the "space act" from which NASA was born.

2000 election - Political Cartoon
Link: http://dmohimani.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/recount/
Summary: The 2000 election was between the Republican candidate George W. Bush and Democrat candidate Al Gore. This election was noteworthy due to the controvery with Florida's votes and the aspect od recounts. This picture is a metaphor of Florida and the mystery of the recounts. This picture indicates Florida saying trick-or-treat with a ballot box as if it was trick or treating and not knowing what candy would be in the bag. This is parrallel to the results of the ballot and the aspects of surprise would occur with votes.
Significance: This is siginifcant because the popular vote winner was not elected. When dealing with the controversial issue with Florida's votes, the soon to be elected president was basically in Florida's hands; making it a cruicial election in history. When dealing with the recounting of Florida votes, it was either all or nothing. The Supreme Court overruled the recount if it was not for the recount of the whole Florida state citizens, therefore the recount was done with. The end to the recounts then gave the state of Florida's Electoral votes to Bush, making him the 2000 presidential election winner.
